1294 (07/2026) Chapter 8: Examples • Chapter 8: Examples Example 2: Parent 1 is unemployed, with no return to work date. They reported timely on June 15; good cause was given. AWS is approved. On July 26 Parent 2 called to report they have been laid off. Their employer gave them a return to work date of Oct. 1 AWS is granted for Parent 2. On Aug. 1, Parent 1 called to report they have a new job. If needed, verify hours or income. Update the case, which will remove AWS from Parent 1 and apply AWS to Parent 2. The copay will not increase since Parent 2 is still laid off. If Parent 2 does not report they have returned to work, ERDC will remain open and the copay will revert to the previous copay amount, prior to going on AWS. ERDC One-parent family becomes a two-parent family Example 1: Dad calls on June 10, to report mom is now in the home. During the conversation the worker determines Mom returned in April. Mom is not employed. AWS is granted through the end of the certification or until she reports starting a new job or school, whichever is sooner. Example 2: Mom calls on September 8, to report dad is now in the home. During the conversation the worker determines dad is a non-working student. Dad is required to submit verification of current class schedule. The schedule will be entered into ONE, ONE will then determine if there are any overlapping class and work hours. The system determines there are overlapping hours for Mom and Dad’s work and class schedules, authorizing an increase in child care hours. Authorized medical leave (AML) Individual program example(s) ERDC Maternity/paternity leave and caring for a sick child Example 1: Participant is placed on bed rest five months into her pregnancy. Medical documentation will be required because the leave extends beyond three months. Example 2: Tony and Steven are married and both work. Tony just gave birth to their second shared child on March 28. Tony goes on leave to care for the newborn effective April, May, and June. Tony goes back to work and both caretakers are now working. Steven calls on July 1 to request maternity/paternity leave to care for the newborn. The AML is denied as the AML period for the newborn ended June 30. Maternity/paternity leave can’t be used back-to-back for a total of six months. Two weeks later Steven calls back on July 15 to report that the newborn had to have surgery and is requesting to use AML to care for the baby during recovery. AML is authorized as the baby is part of the ERDC EDG. The worker will answer the question, “is the caretaker on leave to care for a sick child” as yes. The worker will choose which child they are caring for from the drop-down menu. The menu will populate with the children in the ERDC EDG.
