Same-sex parents who have a child in common are considered one household unit. This may include legal adoptive parents, parents listed on the child’s birth certificate or parents where one partner has undergone gender reassignment procedures and legally changed his or her gender with the Social Security Administration.

Where relationship verification is required, verification of the parent’s identity and a copy of the birth certificate of the child or other legal relationship documentation is required. The legal parents listed on these documents will be accepted by Department of Workforce Services (DWS).
