Residents of approved Group Living Arrangements (GLA) who are disabled may potentially be eligible for SNAP. To be considered disabled the customer must meet the disability definition in policy 254 . The facility must serve 16 or fewer residents and must be a nonprofit facility.
See the list below for approved GLAs. Please note: The necessary questions must be addressed to determine if the customer is eligible for SNAP if living in a non-approved facility. If the organization does not serve more than 50% of the meals, allow individuals to prepare their own meals (if possible), and have a designated location to store their own food, individuals can be eligible for SNAP benefits. If the customer is a vulnerable individual living in this type of facility, they do not need to be on the approved Group Living Arrangement (GLA) list.
Residents of an approved group living arrangement may apply on their own behalf, or may choose someone else to act as an authorized representative. See policy 255-3B for information on these representatives.
You may certify these residents either individually or in groups depending on if they use the facility authorized representative and/or if they share food.
Residents who apply through the facility authorized representative are certified as one-person households.
Residents who apply for themselves or through an authorized representative not associated with the facility are certified as one-person households only if they purchase and prepare meals separately from the other residents of the facility.
Residents who apply for themselves or through an authorized representative not associated with the facility are certified as a group when they purchase and prepare their meals with the group. The whole group is one household.
These homes are approved by the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Mental Health. Use the monthly shelter payment as the shelter cost. If one payment is made for both room and board, deduct the maximum allotment for the household size from the payment. Allow the rest for shelter costs.
