Beginning in April 2020, individuals may receive an advanced tax credit called the Recovery Rebate. This payment is a response to the national COVID-19 health emergency. The Federal government authorized these payments under the COVID-19 CARES Act of 2020.
These Recovery Rebate payments will not count as income to determine eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP benefits.
Eligible individuals may receive up to $1200 for an individual, or up to $2400 for joint filers. Some people will also receive an additional $500 per qualifying child.
Individuals should receive these payments as a direct deposit if their bank account information is on their tax forms filed in either 2018 or 2019. Other individuals will receive a paper check through the mail. Paper checks could take several weeks to several months to be sent out.
Social Security recipients are also eligible for these payments.
