Family Eligibility An eligible family which must contain a dependent child(ren) related to a caretaker within a specified degree of relationship.

Family Evaluation

The first step in the Family Plan where information on the family is gathered to determine the needs of all family members and to identify the barriers to family self-reliance which need to be overcome.

Family Plan

The process of evaluating a family's needs and strengths, identifying the responsibilities of each family member and establishing an Employment Plan, all of which are geared toward family self-reliance.

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program

A program that enables HUD-assisted families to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies. This term applies to escrow accounts established by Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Federal Fiscal Year

A period of 12 calendar months beginning each October 1 and ending with September 30 of the following calendar year.

Federal Minimum Wage

The minimum hourly wage rate allowed by federal law; which is currently $7.25 per hour.

Federal Time Limit TANF benefits that are limited to no more than five years (sixty months) in a recipient’s lifetime for benefit groups containing adult parent/caretaker relatives who are receiving benefits for themselves and minor children.

Filing an Application The action taken by a benefit group or their authorized representative by signing a completed application form requesting financial assistance (TANF benefits).

Filing Date

The date an application is received by the Agency.

Fleeing Felon

An individual fleeing to avoid prosecution, or custody or confinement after conviction of a felony.

Foster Care

Individuals placed in the home of relatives or other individuals or families by the Agency’s foster care program.

Full Week A complete Sunday through Saturday week to determine hours of participation for the TANF Work Program.
