1273 (07/2026) Chapter 8: Examples • Chapter 8: Examples Step 3: Find the amount needed to purchase a single premium immediate annuity to provide income to increase Mrs. Smith‘s income to a computed monthly maintenance needs allowance for the last bullet in Step 1 above. The resource amount allowed the community spouse by this method is calculated below. Go to https://digital.fidelity.com/prgw/digital/gie/ Instructions for the fidelity website: Step 1: Select Just me to answer the question “Who is the annuity for?” Step 2: Fill in the community spouse’s Date of Birth, Gender, and State of Residence, then click Next. Step 3: • Select “How much I want to get each month” as the Estimate type. • Enter the monthly income needed in whole dollars, rounding up to the nearest dollar if necessary, in the Amount field. • Enter the first of the following month as the Income start date (if spend down takes a few months or more, you will need to go back in and enter a new date to get the correct information). • Select “Non-Qualified” in the Funding source field. • Make sure the Increase 2% a year option is not selected. • Click See my results. The top “Cash Refund” amount is the allowed amount for purposes of OAR 461-160- 0580(2)(c)(D) and (2)(f)(D). You can look up the community spouse’s life expectancy in the “Period Life Table” published by the SSA and, for individuals for whom the Fidelity web site, above, will not calculate an annuity (e.g. those over 85 years of age, or who have a shortfall of less than $100 per month) allow, instead, the monthly shortfall multiplied by the number of months of the community spouse’s actuarial life expectancy. REMINDER: There is no requirement that the community spouse actually go out and purchase an annuity. This is just the mathematical measure used. See Actuarial Life Table.
