1213 (07/2026) Chapter 8: Examples • Chapter 8: Examples Example 2: Samuel lost SNAP because he had lottery winnings of $5000. Samuel has reapplied and the 2 filing group members are the same 2 members as in the previously ended cert period. SNAP is determined under regular SNAP rules, not Cat El rules. The filing group has money in savings of $7,900 and $2,700 in wages each month. They fail both the resource test and the income test. They are not eligible for SNAP at this time. Example 3: Manoj, 71 years of age, applies for SNAP for himself only, with SSB of $2500 a month, $3000 in savings, and $2,520 in checking. His mortgage is $1,500 a month, medical expenses are $1,000 a month, and he pays all utilities. Manoj is not categorically eligible. Since he is considered elderly, he is not subject to the countable income test (130%). He passes the net income test (100%). Since $2,500 of the $2,520 in the checking account is his SSB deposited today, that is not countable as a resource. With resources of $3,020 ($3,000 savings and $20 checking) he passes the resource test. TANF Example 1: Jane is on TANF with her children. Both of her children are in school. She has had a JOBS case plan in the past but failed to cooperate with the activities in the plan. She is currently serving a disqualification. She is at a DQ1 and will be moving to a DQ2 next month. The family’s TANF resource limit is $10,000 even though Jane has a current JOBS disqualification. Example 2: Maria is on SSI. She is receiving TANF for her two children. The TANF resource limit for the family is $ 10,000 even though there are no caretaker relatives or parents receiving TANF. Example 3: James is applying for TANF benefits and states that he has a 2015 Honda Accord Civic Sedan LX with 45,000 miles on it and owes $15,735.00 on the vehicle. He states that he does not own any additional vehicles. Per KBB at time of intake the vehicle is worth $9,196 FMV (Average Trade-in Value) Is this vehicle counted as a resource? If so, how much? $ 9,196 FMV (Good Condition) - 15,735 amt owed on vehicle $ - 6,539 This vehicle is not counted as a resource as he owes more than it’s worth.
