Example 4 Susie applied for Medicaid on 3/5/2017. On her application she marked Yes to the question that asks, “Do you want help paying for medical bills from the last 3 months”? Retroactive Medicaid was not processed at initial application. Susie sends a letter to DHHS on 12/5/2017 and asks to have Retroactive Medicaid eligibility determined for December 2016, January, February 2017. Can Susie’s request be processed? Answer: YES. Even though this is more than six months from the application date, exceptions may be allowed due to agency error.
