Some individuals or groups of individuals who meet the definition of a household by customarily purchasing and preparing food apart from others will not be granted separate household status. The following individuals are not eligible for separate household status: (1) A spouse of a household member when the two live together; (2) A boarder; (3) A person age 21 or younger who is living with the person’s natural or adoptive parent(s) or stepparent(s); and (4) Children who are age 17 or younger and under the parental control of an adult household member. A child is considered to be under parental control for purposes of this provision if the individual is financially or otherwise dependent on a member of the household.
