OBBBA SNAP Changes Frequently Asked Questions Updated August 17, 2026 General Questions Q1: When did the changes go into effect? A1: Nebraska implemented the required changes for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) starting October 20, 2025.
Q2: When were the changes applied to my case? A2: The changes were applied to initial applications processed starting October 20, 2025. Changes will be applied to active households at their next semi-annual recertification, when a household member is added, or when other updates are addressed.
Q3: Did I need to use all current SNAP benefits before October 20, 2025? A3: No. The changes are related to eligibility, not benefit usage. SNAP benefits already received will remain available and subject to the normal 9-month expungement period.
Q4: If I am no longer eligible for SNAP, will I continue to qualify for free and reduced-priced meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)? A4: If you no longer receive SNAP, you will no longer be automatically eligible through direct certification. However, you may continue to complete a meal application through your school, and eligibility will be determined based on your household's income.
Q5: If I'm receiving SNAP now, what must I do? A5: No current action is needed. The changes will be applied to your case at your next recertification or when changes are reported.
Alien Eligibility Q6: Does the 5-year waiting period still apply following the OBBBA implementation? A6: Yes. OBBBA did not make changes to the 5-year waiting period requirement or exceptions, which are established by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA).
