What is the maximum amount that I can deposit to a START account?
This amount will depend upon how many accounts the beneficiary has. A single beneficiary may have several accounts owned by different individuals, such as parents, grandparents, etc. Currently, the Maximum Allowable Account Balance in all START accounts for the same beneficiary is $500,000. No deposits will be accepted for any account for the same beneficiary once the (combined) balance of the account(s) reach(es) $500,000.
The maximum amount upon which an account can receive Earnings Enhancements differs for each beneficiary. This amount is called the Earnings Enhancement Cap , and it is based on the qualified higher education expenses at the highest cost public postsecondary institution in Louisiana, projected to the beneficiary's anticipated date of first enrollment in college. Note that deposits will be accepted to an account after the enhancement cap has been reached, provided that the total balance in all accounts for a single beneficiary does not equal or exceed the Maximum Allowable Account Balance .
