WORK EXPERIENCE COMPONENT: INTERNSHIP Description of the component. Provide a summary of the activities and services. WBLI is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skill development in a professional setting. WBLI gives students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths. WBLI also gives employers an opportunity to guide and evaluate an EF client’s performance. WBLI will be a short-term (up to 12 months), hands-on, supervised work experience with a professional organization that is designed to increase a student's knowledge of a professional career field. WBLIs range from 20 - 400 hours total and include intentional learning objectives related to increasing student knowledge, training to develop additional skills, and quality supervision to guide and mentor the student. All work activities and unsubsidized employment placements are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and minimum wage laws apply. Employers, EF POs, and training providers will collaborate to develop curriculum for clients in WBLI to provide the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom in a work setting. This curriculum will clearly define learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform. Labor market research and the skills needed in WBLI will be used to identify if the skills or knowledge learned are transferable to other employment settings. Employers, EF POs, and training providers will define a beginning and end and develop a job description with desired qualifications based on labor market reach and the skills/qualifications needed to obtain employment following the WBLI. WBLIs can last up to 12 months. The employer must provide supervision by a professional with expertise and an educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience. The experienced supervisor must also provide routine feedback. The employer must provide resources, equipment, and facilities (identified in labor market research, such as job postings, etc.) that support learning objectives/goals. A WBLI should be in an in-demand career within the local area and can be demonstrated through: LMI Gateway analytics print-out O*NET Online employment outlook print-out Local job boards and/or Connecting Colorado Pre-employment offer letter Other documentation that supports the employment opportunity is in-demand or in a growing industry in the local labor market Is this component subsidized by SNAP E&T?
