WIC Text Message Program
Policy: WIC provides automated text messages to clients. Messages sent to the endorser/client may include appointment reminders, missed appointment notifications, food benefit reminders, WIC service reminders, requests for client feedback, or other critical information/alerts as authorized by the State WIC Director (ie. government shutdown, natural disaster, etc.).
Regulation: Colorado WIC Policy
Procedure/Additional Guidance: Staff must notify all clients of the Colorado WIC Text Messaging Program when the client’s phone number is collected at the initial WIC appointment or updated at subsequent appointments. If a participant would like to receive WIC text messages, the “Allow Calls” and “Allow Texts” check boxes must both be checked on the Contact/Address panel.
After the initial WIC appointment, Colorado WIC sends a “Welcome to WIC” text message to those opting to receive texts. The text contains instructions on how to opt out of the text message program. If a client chooses to opt out, they will be removed from any future texts immediately.
To Opt Out at Any Time Clients can text “STOP” directly to the WIC text message.
To Opt Back In If a client opts out of the WIC text messages and wants to opt back in, the client can text “START” to the WIC text message. If they do not have a WIC text message, they can text “START” to 1-888-974-2684.
The State WIC Office does not send out text messages at request on behalf of local WIC agencies or WIC partners.
