WIC FOOD PACKAGE 4
Guidance to Promote and Support The Partially Breastfed Infant Goal: To provide as minimal amount of supplemental formula as is needed while offering counseling and support in order to help the mother establish a successful milk supply.
• A breastfed infant should not be “automatically” provided a can of formula in the first month of life.
• If after a careful assessment, the provider determines that formula is appropriate for the infant during the first month. Only one can of powdered formula or up to 104 oz ready to feed formula may be issued.
• The provider is expected to individually tailor the amount of formula issued based on the breastfeeding assessment.
• Food packages should be tailored for months one through eleven to provide the minimal amount of supplemental formula.
• If the infant receives one can of powdered formula and then is not issued any more formula, the infant should be issued a fully breastfed package for the upcoming months.
